C3FAC ATTENDS
CFEDwest CONFERENCE & EXPO
Posted May 24, 2013
The C3FAC team attended the CFED (California Fire EMS Disaster) West Conference & Expo May 20-23 in Palm Springs, CA, and it was truly an enriching experience. We had many opportunities to network and share our mission and purpose. On display was our Memorial Fire Bell, which has been carried across the nation several times and used to honor and remember firefighters who have lost their lives to cancer. The huge tub of Twin Dragon almond cookies in front of our booth served as an effective welcome mat for attendees, thanks to JSL Foods. The event was well organized and we met many, many positive people.
We want to thank the members of the C3FAC team who were such an integral part of C3FAC’s successful presence at the event: our National Ambassador, FF Katrina Silvia (who traveled all the way from Florida), FF Rick Van Tuyl, Jack Thoreson, and Pam De Marco. We especially want to thank Fire Chief John Allen and the Palm Springs firefighters for taking the time to pay a visit to the C3FAC booth. Special thanks also to William Shatner for personally signing the C3FAC Warrior Helmet which was successfully auctioned off, serving as a great fundraiser for the Foundation; and, of course, the proud new owner of the helmet, whose generous contribution made a very positive impact. We are also grateful to all involved in organizing this great event. Everyone we came into contact with was very helpful, professional, courteous, and friendly, and we definitely plan on returning next year.

C3FAC HELMET SHIELD
OFFICIALLY DEPLOYED BY FF CIELO ACOSTA
May 18, 2013
On May 18, 2013, the C3FAC Helmet Shield of Hope and Honor was officially deployed for the first time when Firefighter Cielo Acosta punched out a 5k in less than 30 minutes, representing C3FAC at the Run for the Red--a race put on by the American Red Cross. The organization helped C3FAC President/Founder Lorenzo Abundiz in 2006 by conducting a nationwide search for matching blood, locating two units and making it possible for Lorenzo to undergo an urgently needed kidney surgery. We salute the American Red Cross, and we salute Cielo for his incredible efforts.

CODE 3.1 FIRE RUN
Posted April 13, 2013
On Saturday, April 13, 2013, we attended the Brawley Firefighters Association's inaugural Code 3.1 Fire Run. With a name like that, we couldn't resist being a part of it! The event was a great success, exceeding expectations with a turnout of over 200 runners. The Brawley Firefighters did a great job of organizing the event, and we were blessed to be able to meet many of them and share how they, as athletes, can become a part of our cause. It was great to be able to introduce them to Team Firefighter as well, an organization dedicated to providing support to firefighters who want to better themselves through fitness in sport and which has chosen Code 3 as the main nonprofit they support. Congratulations to the Brawley Firefighters on organizing such an awesome event!

ACHIEVES MARATHON
Posted April 7, 2013
On Saturday, April 6, Firefighter Cielo Acosta completed his first marathon of the season: the Yakima River Canyon Marathon in Washington. But he didn't "just" race for 26.2 miles. He did more. He wore his firefighting gear during the entire race, adding substantial weight to the challenge, in order to bring attention to our Foundation and cause. Check out all the photos of Cielo's race on our Facebook page.
Cielo started his 2013 season in Seattle on March 10 with the Scott Firefighter Stairclimb. He climbed up 69 floors with full gear, breathing air from his SCBA. He finished in less than 22 minutes. On March 23, he traveled to San Francisco for the Fight for Air Climb. He climbed 52 floors in full gear in 13 minutes and got the fastest time in the individual firefighter division.
Firefighter Acosta has done great things for Code 3; in addition to setting up a fundraising page with the noble goal of raising $5,000, he passes out Code 3 fliers and brochures whenever he gets the opportunity. We salute Firefighter Acosta for his incredible athletic accomplishments, and for his remarkable efforts for the cause.
Any athlete interested in fundraising for Code 3 can set up a fundraising page.

Code 3 was happy to provide a golf towel for each golfer, as well as some golf-related items for the raffle. Our gratitude is owed to event organizer/FF Joel Hammer and all involved in planning and carrying out the event, as well as the golfers who signed up and played. We thank the Fallbrook Firefighters Association for their amazing support.
CONGRATULATIONS TO
FIREFIGHTER JOHN MCKNIGHT
Posted March 31, 2013
On Thursday, March 28, we attended the retirement party of Code 3 Logistics Officer and crew member, Firefighter John McKnight, of North County Fire. Hearing the speeches and "roasts" given confirmed John's incredible talent, as well as the funny stories that we all share about him. John has been an integral part of the Code 3 team since we began in 2008, from developing the itinerary for our very first Annual Mission to driving the fire engine across the country, to designing our main logo as well as our patch, which is very popular among firefighters and civilians alike. John is currently in the process of refining our logos to more easily be printed on a variety of promotional items, including shirts, which we will be offering in the future. We thank John for all he has given in service to both North County and Code 3, and we congratulate him on a very successful 30-year firefighting career.

FF KEVIN OLDHAM
Posted March 4, 2013
March 2013 marks two years since Code 3 team member, Firefighter Kevin Oldham, went to Heaven. Kevin first met up with us in October 2010 during our Annual Mission of Honor and Hope, when we made a stop at Zion Fire Department (Illinois). The Mission of Honor and Hope is a journey we conduct once a year in which a crew of firefighter/cancer survivors drive a fire engine to various fire departments acroacross the country to share their cancer testimonials in order to encourage use of protective equipment and early cancer screenings among firefighters. Along the journey, the team collects the names of firefighters who have lost their lives to cancer and honors them in a ceremony conducted at the Los Angeles Fire Department. (The Missions have all been funded by the Sutphen Corporation, which has provided the fire engine and fuel for the journey.)
During the 2010 Mission, while President/Founder Lorenzo Abundiz made a presentation about Code 3 for a Cure to the Zion firefighters, this young man standing in the back kept catching his attention because he had a purple Mohawk. After Lorenzo’s presentation, the young man, Kevin Oldham (33 years old, married with two little girls) approached Lorenzo, introduced himself, and told him he had Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Kevin was sporting the Mohawk to bring attention to the issue of cancer and the organization he had formed (Mo-Hawk, Less Cancer), to help his family and which also assists families with children who have a potentially terminal illness.
Lorenzo invited Kevin to join the Mission. Kevin did just that, meeting up with the crew about a week later in Charlotte, North Carolina, and making presentations at numerous fire departments throughout several states in order to save the lives of his brother and sister firefighters by sharing his story.
In spite of his own struggles, Kevin joined the Mission again in January 2011 to continue to help fellow firefighters.
Kevin passed away on March 11, 2011, but he lives on in our hearts and will always be an integral part of the Code 3 crew. We encourage you all to listen to Kevin tell his story.
FIREFIGHTER JAZZ DOOLITTLE
REPRESENTS
AT SWAMPHOUSE HALF
Updated March 3, 2013
We are so proud of what Firefighter Jazz Doolittle, mother of two and cancer survivor, achieved on Sunday, March 3, 2013. She finished the Swamphouse Half Marathon in 3:19:57---in her firefighter gear, including air tank and helmet! But that's not "all." In addition to the intense physical preparations that go into completing a race like this, Jazz took it upon herself to design and order Code 3 shirts so that she and others can bring attention to the cause. In addition, she spent hours preparing her air tank, creating an amazing way to represent the Foundation.
Pictured Above: After achieving the Swamphouse Half Marathon on March 3, 2013, FF Jazz Doolittle poses with an awesome team, including her sister (standing to her right), all wearing the Code 3 shirt Jazz herself designed. They are holding a special Code 3 banner, which was created by FF John McKnight and carried across America on our very first Annual Mission of Honor and Hope. This particular banner is special to us because it symbolizes the birth of our Foundation, and we are greatly honored that it was held up in this way by this incredible group of individuals.
Check out all the photos from the Swamphouse Half Marathon on our Facebook page!
Firefighter Doolittle is a member of Team Firefighter. Beginning in 2012, Team Firefighter selected Code 3 as the main nonprofit organization they support. We encourage all firefighters to join Team Firefighter, which is dedicated to providing support to firefighters who want to better themselves through fitness in sport. Firefighter Jazz Doolittle, who is also a cancer survivor, is a true hero and warrior. She will be representing us at the Swamp House Half Marathon this Sunday, March 3--completing it in FULL TURNOUT GEAR! The banner she is holding was designed by FF John McKnight (North County Fire, CA), who also designed our patch and logo. It was carried across America on the Code 3 fire engine during the first Annual Mission of Honor and Hope across America. It represents the birth of Code 3, and we are greatly honored that Firefighter Doolittle will be using it to represent the Foundation and all those affected by cancer. Go, Jazz!!!!

IN BUNKER GEAR
Posted February 17, 2013
FF Nathan Williams achieved the Annual Buzz Marathon on California's Central Coast yesterday -- in his bunker gear. He did this for his dad, as a member of Team Firefighter, and as a supporter of Code 3. FF Williams is a true warrior, and we salute him for his noble achievement.
In his words:
"Run update: I survived.
I finished almost an hour ahead of the time I "hoped" for and pushed through some gnarly cramps. I have some battle wounds but a ton of pride. Some of my fellow firefighter brothers along with a bunch of strangers showed me great support (my brother Kevin Wolf said I need to turn down my music next time so I can hear them!).
In the end this was really for my dad, Gregg Williams.
I love you dad."

OVER THE OUTSTANDING EFFORTS
OF FF JAZZ DOOLITTLE
Posted February 2, 2013
Another firefighter athlete has stepped forward and expressed her desire to represent Code 3 through her athletic achievements. Team Firefighter member FF Jazz Doolittle will be competing in numerous races this year to bring attention to our Foundation and cause. Her first was on February 2, the Lady Track Shack 5k, which she completed in fire gear. In addition to getting our official patch sewn onto her gear, Jazz also took it upon herself to design a special shirt for Code 3 so that the 10 other individuals who joined her, including Marette Sims and Lt. Kevin Sims (there in support for this women's run) could promote Code 3 as well. Jazz and Marette also interviewed with CBS Radio at the event, giving great exposure to Code 3. We are JAZZed about Jazz's efforts, as well as that of Marette and the others who joined her. Check out the album on our Facebook page. A MOTHER'S AMAZING TRIBUTE
TO HER SON
Posted January 27, 2013
The quote below is From Theresa Oldham, proud and loving mother of Firefighter KEVIN OLDHAM, Code 3 team member who has touched so many lives. Kevin made a tremendous impact on fellow firefighters and others on our Mission of Honor and Hope, and continues to do so.
"The attached tattoo is dedicated to our son Kevin and some of the things he loved to do. The fishing hook as he loved to fish, the guitar and music notes, the wings that are on the Code 3 for a Cure fire truck. He often said "Embrace Life Man", "Embrase Life". The fire department emblem as he loved his job. The "I Love You" in his writing. I think he would have thought this was the coolest tattoo. There is a small cancer ribbon but it is small because that is not who Kevin was. We miss him each and every day. We love you now and forever ♥"

BBQ FUNDRAISER

HAMILTON BROWN HOUSE
Taking Place on January 25, 2013
We encourage everyone in the Houston area to come out and support the Hamilton Brown House project by attending the BBQ Fundraiser taking place on Friday, January 25, 2013.
Says Chief Lorenzo Diaz of the Houston Fire Department (visionary behind the project): "The Society of Houston Latino Fire Fighters, the directors of The Hamilton Brown House, are hosting a BBQ Fundraiser to help pay the Property Taxes. This is still a work in progress and we continue to try to find the funds to get started on the rebuilding project. Our goal is to assist Fire Fighters across the nation who visit Houston Medical Center for Cancer and other extended illnesses and need a place to stay. A home away from home for our brother fire fighters to help reduce the financial burden on their family during this extended treatment. This is still our dream and our goal, so if you can help us with $8.00 a plate for some good BBQ we would appreciate your visit at the old FS027 6302 Lyons @ Kress on Friday January 25, 2013.

COME THROUGH FOR A BROTHER
BATTLING CANCER
Posted January 5, 2013
We salute the Corpus Christi Firefighters for all they did to help a brother firefighter who is fighting cancer by conducting a very successful fundraising event today. They are a hero's heroes in our eyes. Firefighters deserve this kind of support when they are stricken with cancer, especially since statistics show a likelihood of cancer among them because of the toxins they are exposed to in the line of duty. Read more about the efforts of the Corpus Christi Firefighters.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Posted January 1, 2013
As we embark on a New Year, we would like to share with you this video of memories of our past Annual Missions of Honor and Hope, 2008 - 2012. We invite you to climb aboard the Code 3 fire truck (generously provided by Sutphen Corporation, who also financed the fuel for the journeys) and enjoy some memories with us as our team of firefighter cancer survivors traveled across America and Canada with a three-fold purpose:
1.
Honor and remember firefighters (active or retired) who have lost their lives to cancer, because it was they who paved the way, through their service and sacrifice, to the safer equipment and procedures used by firefighters today.
2. Bring attention to the prevalence of firefighting related cancers and encourage early cancer screenings and use of protective equipment among fellow firefighters. (Since there is no known cure for cancer, the most effective weapon against it right now is finding it at its weakest point.)
3. Share our experiences and give hope, support, and encouragement to firefighters and others who are fighting their own personal battles with cancer.
As we look behind with pride at what our team has accomplished, we also realize that none of it would have been possible without the involvement and generosity of many. Our deepest gratitude is owed to the individuals, corporations, firefighters, groups, associations, and local I.A.F.F. unions who have all been such an integral part of our success. THANK YOU. It is because of you that we have progressed further toward our financial goals over the past year. Although providing financial assistance to firefighters battling cancer on a nationwide basis (whether salaried, paid call, or volunteer) is a large undertaking and we still have work to do in terms of reaching our 80/10/10 percentage goals (80% to firefighters battling cancer who are facing a financial hardship, 10% to other nonprofits, and 10% to operating costs), we have faith that, with everyone's help, we will reach these percentage goals. We wish you all a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Mark your calendars, pack your gear, and plan to travel to the magnificent San Juan Islands, Washington, on May 15-17, 2013, for the Roche Harbor Multi-Sport Challenge (15k Run, 35k Bike, 12k Kayak). This event is open to all firefighters and EMS personnel, and will benefit our Foundation.
A major aspect of our purpose is to provide financial assistance to firefighters battling cancer who are facing a financial hardship, and your registration in this event will make a big difference in helping us continue to operate and issue funds. Half the proceeds from your registration will go to Code 3, the other half to a charity of your choice. With your registration fee, you will receive: Welcome Prime Rib Banquet, Kayak Rental including outfitting, Five Alarm Chili Cookoff with live music, Firehouse Breakfast, Awards Banquet and Prizes. Click logo on left to view the event flier. You can REGISTER HERE.
Additionally, Roche Harbor is asking each registrant to collect $100 in pledges for charity, again with a 50/50 split: the registrant will give at least half to Code 3, the other half to a charity of the registrant's choice. There are three main ways to donate to Code 3: (1) via credit card through our website donation page; (2) by mailing a check to: Code 3 for a Cure Foundation, P.O. Box 9087, Alta Loma, CA 91701; or (3) by setting up up your own fundraising page through the Code 3 for a Cure site on Active Network. Once you are on our Active site, just click on the lower right section that says "Individuals: Click here to build your personal fundraising page." FIREFIGHTER KATRINA SILVIA
FEATURED IN DOLCE VITA MAGAZINE
November 28, 2012
We are excited to announce that Firefighter Katrina Silvia is receiving some well deserved recognition. Firefighter Silvia achieved the Ironman Florida on November 3, wearing firefighter gear during the entire 26.2 mile marathon portion, to bring attention to our Foundation and cause.
She is featured
in the Winter 2012 edition of Dolce Vita Magazine. View online article here. You can also click here to view the article as it appears in the magazine.
Over the past several months, Firefighter Silvia has shown tremendous dedication to furthering the Code 3 for a Cure cause. In addition to preparing her body physically and pushing herself to the remarkable achievement of the 2012 Ironman Florida in firefighter gear, Firefighter Silvia has consistently gone above and beyond to bring attention to Code 3 by approaching both individuals and companies to share it with them. Her incredible efforts have resulted in donations in excess of $3,100, all of which went directly to our Foundation.
Even during some of her races, Firefighter Silvia carries Code 3 fliers in her turnout pockets, passing them to onlookers. According to Firefighter Silvia, her biggest challenge has been keeping the fliers "dry" while in the middle of a hard workout.
Florida Governor Rick Scott was so impressed with her efforts that he wrote a letter to Firefighter Silvia which says, in part, "I join your family, friends, and community in being very proud of you for this very special accomplishment. Your dedication to helping firefighters who are stricken with cancer is admirable and inspiring. By completing the marathon portion of Ironman Florida in firefighter gear, you have honored and brought hope to firefighters and their families as they continue in their fights against this disease."
We congratulate Katrina on her outstanding achievement and on this well deserved recognition, and we thank her for her phenomenal efforts.
KURT LESSENTHIEN ACHIEVES HALF MARATHON
ON THANKSGIVING DAY
FOR CODE 3 AND CATTY SHACK RANCH
Posted November 22, 2012
Kurt Lessenthien did us a great honor by wearing the Code 3 for a Cure patch on his Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary shirt as he achieved a half marathon today in Jacksonville, Florida in 1:59:36. Kurt also did this in support of Firefighter Katrina Silvia's incredible efforts for our cause. Here's what he posted on his Facebook timeline: "It's not too late to donate to Code 3 for a Cure on behalf of firefighter Katrina Silvia. With all the donations including her webpage, she has raised over $3,000 to help firefighters battling cancer. Her goal is $5,000, and with a little help we can get her there. This is a great cause championed by an amazing person. Please help if you can. Thank you"
We are so proud of what Kurt did to support Katrina's efforts for our cause, and to achieve the half marathon in such great time. Kurt also made two generous donations to Code 3. He is a true ambassador for ours and another great cause, the Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary. Thank you, brother, and congratulations!
FIREFIGHTER PATRICK GORDON:
A TRUE WARRIOR IN THE FIGHT
Posted November 19, 2012
We just received this letter via Facebook from Firefighter Patrick Gordon, a true warrior in the fight who is in the middle of his own all-out war and needs weapons of prayers and miracles to beat the enemy in his body. We ask for everyone's prayers for strength and healing for Patrick, and that doctors find nothing on November 30. The more positive spiritual thoughts we have being sent up into the Heavens for him the better. Thank you, everyone, and thank you, Patrick. It is a great honor to know you and we are the better for it.
"Lorenzo and Peggy. I just wanted to say God Bless you both for all that you do. As you know, in 2008 I was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer. Four years, 6 surgeries, 23 procedures, chemo, radiation, and a permanent colostomy later they just found metastasized cancer in my liver. I really thought that I finally had it beat, but it wasn’t to be. I go in for liver surgery on November 30th at University of Chicago Hospital. They told me that no chemo or radiation is suggested this time. Once they open me up they will be able to ultrasound the liver and if they see any other spots but the one, they will just sew me back up and it will be over. So it’s do or die in the most literal sense this time. I know I’m a fighter by what I’ve been through, but I always swore that when it becomes “buying time” I would choose quality over quantity. I have around a 20% chance to be cured so I continue on. I ask and want nothing but your prayers on the
30th. I’m still working full time on the ladder company and am so glad I still have things to look forward to. My city, union brothers, chiefs, friends and family have been very supportive as have both of you.
I don’t remember exactly how we initially touched base. Much of the time back then I have somehow blocked out of my memory, but I do remember that neither of you have ever forgotten me or my fight. To go out of your way to visit me at my fire station just to say hello, which incidentally I know took you hundreds of miles out of the way blew me away. If anyone out there is ever questioning your dedication, honesty, or love for the firefighting community, you can tell them to call me anytime. If I manage to pull this off and I’m still here, I will give testimony anytime for both you and the cause.
Keep going strong you two. Love you guys!
Patrick"

FIREFIGHTER KATRINA SILVIA
ACHIEVES IRONMAN FLORIDA
Posted November 10, 2012
On November 3, 2012, Firefighter Katrina Silvia (St. Johns County, FL) completed the Ironman Florida for our Foundation and cause. After swimming 2.4 miles and biking 112, Firefighter Silvia donned her firefighter gear, including air tank and helmet (including Code 3 HOPE Shield) and achieved the marathon portion. She completed the race at 11:45pm, after 16 hours and 45 minutes. After all of that, she still managed to carry the 5-foot Code 3 banner across the finish line, a great tribute to the cause as well as to her own determination and spirit. But Firefighter Silvia did more than "just" achieve the Ironman Florida in firefighter gear; she spent the several months leading up to the race pounding the pavement in a different way: she rallied people to donate to Code 3 for a Cure, resulting in over $2,500 in donations to the cause. Katrina is a Warrior of Hope and Honor, and we congratulate and commend her on this incredible accomplishment. Most of all, we thank her for being such a tremendous ambassador for the cause.

We recently learned that on September 29, 2012, Firefighter Cory Taylor completed the YMCA Maple Leaf Half Marathon in La Crosse, Wisconsin for our Foundation and cause. Firefighter Taylor says he was inspired to help after observing the efforts of Firefighter Robert Verhelst. Says Firefighter Taylor, "After seeing all his efforts for Code 3 for a Cure I started asking myself if maybe I could do something for this group through all of the events I enter throughout each year." About the Maple Leaf event, Cory shared the following: "I received a lot of support and positive feedback from spectators along the route, wanting to know about Code 3 for a Cure....so I’m glad that I was able to bring some awareness for this great foundation." In addition to raising awareness, Firefighter Taylor raised funds as well, and we greatly appreciate all he did for Code 3. Thanks, Cory!

Firefighter/Paramedic Ethan Dade (Madison, WI) achieved the St. Louis Half Marathon yesterday (October 21) in 2 hours 27 minutes wearing firefighter turnout gear, including air tank and helmet (Code 3 for a Cure "HOPE" helmet shield provided by fellow Madison Firefighter Robert Verhelst).
Firefighter Dade has already achieved two other races in this fashion for our cause this year: the April 15 St. Louis Half Marathon and the Chicago Rock n Roll Half Marathon on July 22. Says Ethan, "I take the responsibility of being a vehicle to make people aware of this amazing charity very seriously and hope I'm making a difference for firefighters with cancer and their families! I love this job...not really a job but lifestyle and the many avenues we have to help people out. If someone can fight cancer for an extended amount of time I can run a half marathon to support them!!"

Thanks to all of you who are making it happen through your generous donations, your incredible athletic accomplishments, and your tremendous efforts. We also thank this courageous firefighter for taking the time to write such a heartfelt message.
FIREFIGHTER ROBERT VERHELST:
140.6 AT A TIME
Posted October 19, 2012
He's achieved numerous triathlons in his firefighter gear this year, including none other than the Ironman World Championship in Kona, HI on October 13, his amazing finish of which is pictured left. What Firefighter Robert Verhelst has done for Code 3 for a Cure is truly amazing. Through his efforts, Code 3 is getting more well known, and it's through his inspiration that other firefighter athletes, motivated by what Firefighter Verhelst is doing, are now competing for Code 3--also in turnout gear--to help their fellow firefighters who are suffering with cancer.

FIREFIGHTER ETHAN DADE
TO RUN THE ST. LOUIS HALF MARATHON
FOR CODE 3
Posted October 17, 2012
We are very pleased and proud to share that Firefighter/Paramedic Ethan Dade (Madison, WI) will be running in the St. Louis Half Marathon for our Foundation this Sunday. Firefighter Dade has already completed two other races in this fashion (April 15 and July 22) for our cause. He is pictured here running the Chicago Rock n Roll Half Marathon on July 22, wearing the Code 3 for a Cure HOPE helmet shield provided to him by Firefighter Robert Verhelst (who recently completed the Ironman World Championship for Code 3). Says Ethan, "Happy to announce I will be running the St.Louis Half Marathon on October 21st. Hoping to post a great time for Code 3 for a Cure and continue to raise awareness and fundraising for the cause." We greatly appreciate all Firefighter Dade is doing, and we wish him strength this Sunday. Go, Ethan!
A REMINDER OF WHY
THIS FOUNDATION WAS FORMED
Posted October 16, 2012
This photo was taken after a fire at a commercial building that stored tires, vehicles, etc. Pictured center is the President and Founder of Code 3 for a Cure, Lorenzo Abundiz. The fire broke out on October 10, 1990, in Santa Ana, California. While crews were fighting the fire, a part of the building structure had collapsed on some of his comrades. Having no time to hook up his breathing mask, Lorenzo rushed in to help them. A medical expert at USC wrote, “This patient, in effect, was a rubber worker. He had as much exposure during that rubber fire as many rubber workers have in a lifetime of work.”
That was one call, one incident, during one shift. Imagine what he was exposed to over his 27-year firefighting career. Like many firefighters, Lorenzo’s exposures included pesticides, household poisons, fertilizers, plastics, gasoline and other petroleum products, explosives, drug lab chemicals, and so on.
In 1998, Lorenzo was stricken with a rare and aggressive cancer called leiomyosarcoma. A report written by the medical expert at USC stated that “It is medically certain in my mind that this patient’s tumor is work related,” and to deny this as an industrial injury is “inexcusable.” Nevertheless, the same City who had presented him with a citation for bravery for his heroism during that 1990 fire repeatedly denied Lorenzo’s requests for workers’ compensation benefits. One particular memory he recalls is sitting in a deposition hearing post-surgery with drainage tubes hanging off his side, feeling like a criminal because he was reaching out for help so he could receive adequate medical care. In a letter dated June 28, 2000, California State Assemblyman Louis Papan wrote, “…my staff and I have hoped that common sense and humanity would prevail in this situation. I’m sorry that has not happened yet.”
Unfortunately, Lorenzo’s case is not an isolated one. While many may think firefighters are well taken care of when faced with a cancer diagnosis, many times that is not the case. Learn more about this fact, and the correlation between firefighting and cancer on our FF Cancer page.
In 2003, just one month after Lorenzo was declared cured from the leiomyosarcoma, he was diagnosed with a second cancer, in his bladder. The pathology report showed traces of tar. Lorenzo had never smoked a cigarette in his life, but had fought many roof fires throughout his career. Nevertheless, he opted not to subject himself to the nightmare of filing a workers’ compensation claim. Instead, Lorenzo decided to put his energy and focus into answering a different call: work together with a team of people to build the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation, a national 501(c)3 nonprofit public charity. In addition to completing an Annual Mission of Honor and Hope, Code 3 for a Cure’s primary purpose is to provide financial assistance to firefighters across the country who are stricken with cancer and facing a financial hardship, regardless of whether they belong to a union or not, and regardless of whether they are salaried, paid call, or volunteer, because cancer doesn’t care about any of those factors. (Lorenzo is currently fighting prostate cancer, and his prognosis is good.)
You can read more about the history of Code 3 on our History page.

FIREFIGHTER ROBERT VERHELST
ACHIEVES IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
AND BRINGS ATTENTION TO CODE 3
October 13, 2012
Although considered an amazing feat in itself, Firefighter Robert Verhelst didn't "just" complete the Ironman World Championship triathlon in Kona, Hawaii on October 13. After swimming 2.4 miles and biking 112, he finished the 26.2 mile marathon portion in firefighter gear, including air tank and helmet, to help bring attention to our Foundation and cause. And this is not the first time he has completed a triathlon in this fashion; Robert has achieved numerous full and half distance triathlons over the past year in firefighter gear. We appreciate all he has done to bring attention to Code 3, and to inspire others to do the same. Read more about Robert.

CODE 3 ATTENDS
SCOTT FF COMBAT CHALLENGE
October 5-6, 2012
We were proud to be a part of the Firefighter Combat Challenge in Las Vegas, Nevada, and appreciate all the hard work Las Vegas Firefighter Robert "Jake" Jacobsmeyer put into organizing this great event, along with others who played a part in it. Jake also put together a raffle/fundraiser for Firefighter Jeanie Allen (Middleton, ID), who was a competitor in the Challenge and is currently battling clear cell sarcoma. We thank all who contributed by donating a prize or purchasing raffle tickets. We were honored to support and assist with the raffle, and know that Jeanie will continue to heal and get stronger. We pray for strength and healing for all firefighters who have been afflicted by cancer, as well as their families.
Emcee Mike Word did an incredible job promoting the raffle and the mission of Code 3. He also led us all in a powerful prayer of healing for Jeanie during the opening ceremony, as firefighters from across America and Canada huddled around her and enveloped her in a circle of support.
The Honor Guard of Las Vegas Local 1285, who go above and beyond in volunteering their time at special events, performed during the opening ceremony, adding a great deal of honor to the ceremony.
Congratulations to all the courageous firefighters across America and Canada who showed true grit in their determination to take on this Challenge.

ROBERT K. GUERIN MEMORIAL FOUNDATION
4th ANNUAL BOWLING FUNDRAISER
ON OCTOBER 6, 2012 IN KINOSHA, WISCONSIN
(Posted September 18, 2012)
We hope that those of you who are in the vicinity of Kinosha, Wisconsin on Saturday, October 6, 2012, will be able to come to this really fun fundraiser for a great cause. You can register here. Here is an excerpt from the Foundation's website explaining what the fundraiser is all about: "Lieutenant Robert "Bobby" Guerin retired from the Zion Fire Rescue Department after 30 years of service. He died in 2008 after a long battle with cancer. He left his wife Bridget, and children Ross and Allison. This scholarship was created at Bobby’s request, in the hope of giving back to his colleagues in the fire service whom he loved so much. As such, the ideal applicant will embody those characteristics which so defined Bobby. Athletics/extracurricular activities reflect on his love of baseball, softball, and bowling, and represent the team spirit which was so important to him, and which is at the heart of being a firefighter. Community involvement demonstrates Bobby’s commitment to those around him, and his passion for caring for others. Being a Lake County resident reflects his sense of community. Bobby worked in Zion and raised his family here. He was proud to live and work here. He would be honored to know that a scholarship bearing his name awards students who personify these traits."
Bridget Guerin, a dear friend, shared with us her experiences in order to offer her support to others who have suffered through tragedy. Here is her story, in her own words: "Cancer invited itself into our lives in 2005. My husband Bobby was a veteran firefighter, and the love of my life. We had been married for 24 years, had two great kids (Ross and Allison), and things were humming along nicely. Life had indeed been very good to us - we felt very blessed.
"At 49, following his annual department physical, Bobby began having urinary issues. After considerable prodding from me (so typical!) he went to our family doctor who sent him to a urologist. In spite of having a PSA level of 1.9, (a level of 10+ usually raises concern) Bobby was diagnosed with an extremely agressive form of prostate cancer. While we were certainly frightened, it truly never crossed our minds that we could lose this battle. Doctors found cancer cells in his lymph nodes during surgery to remove the prostate a couple of months later. They left the prostate and turned their attention to this new, much more alarming development. Over the next two years, Bobby endured seemingly endless rounds of chemo, at least two clinical trials, and radiation. Ultimately, it was not meant to be, and we lost him in August of 2008.
"While it certainly didn't end the way we had hoped, there were so very many blessings during Bobby's illness, and we experienced love and friendship in an intensity that only comes through life's trials. We were fortunate to meet that one doctor that truly embraced us and made sure Bobby felt well enough to renew our vows on our 25th anniversary in the Virgin Islands, or so Bobby could attend White Sox Fantasy Camp in Arizona. He was able to attend our daughter's graduation from high school, and most especialy, see his son become a firefighter. All of these special moments were truly gifts that Bobby treasured, and the kids and I hold on to.
"The one constant throughout Bobby's illness and in the years since his passing has been our firefighter family. The men of the Zion Fire and Rescue Department and their families were with us through everything, including praying with us, staying at the hospital each night with us, bringing food, and ultimately helping us give him back to God. It is truly humbling to be part of such an extraordinary group of people, who still stand beside us whenever we call on them. Together with my family, they have embraced the cause of Code 3 for a Cure, and will continue to be part of this mission to raise awareness and remember those we have lost. Again, we are incredibly blessed." -Bridget Guerin-

"IRONMAN FIREFIGHTER" ROBERT VERHELST
TO REPEAT IRONMAN WISCONSIN
Posted August 30, 2012
On Sunday, September 9, Madison Firefighter Robert Verhelst will compete in the Ironman triathlon in his home state of Wisconsin to bring attention to, and raise funds for, our Foundation and cause. What makes Robert's efforts truly incredible, beyond completing the full distance race (which will include a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run), is that, after finishing the swim and bike, he will complete the 26.2 mile marathon portion in firefighter gear, including air tank and helmet. In addition to representing our Foundation, Robert will achieve this incredible athletic feat to honor and remember all who lost their lives on 9/11. (Firefighter Verhelst responded to Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks happened, and spent 8 days assisting in the search and recovery efforts.)
Robert became inspired to help raise funds for Code 3 for a Cure following our visit to his Department in Madison, Wisconsin, as part of our Annual Mission of Honor and Hope. Initially, Robert planned to complete one race in firefighter gear for our cause: the 2011 Ironman Wisconsin, which took place on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11; however, after his impressive achievement of that race, Robert decided that he wanted to do even more. Thus far in 2012, he has already finished 8 triathlons in his firefighter gear for our Foundation; Ironman Wisconsin will be his 9th.
Firefighter Verhelst (a.k.a., "Fireman Rob") was recently selected to represent Code 3 for a Cure at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii on October 13. He is one of only two individuals who were selected by Ironman's panel of judges to compete in this worldwide event, and we are extremely proud of his accomplishment. Says Robert, "Your strength is in your passion." He is living proof.
In the video below, created by Jeremy Nichols, Firefighter Verhelst explains why he competes for Code 3 for a Cure:

FIRE VELO COMPLETES ITS ANNUAL
SF TO LA RIDE
August 25, 2012
The National Fire Velo Cycling Club's Annual SF to LA Ride came to a successful close today on the Santa Monica Pier. Beginning on August 19 as they crossed the Golden Gate Bridge to set off on their long trek to Santa Monica, these firefighter athletes showed their true commitment and determination, through fog, drizzle, a wide variety of roadways, construction work, tight squeezes, and other challenges along remarkably scenic Highway 1, to cross the finish line in beautiful SoCal. The last day of their journey included an awesome escort with fire apparatus for several miles by the Oxnard Fire Department, as well as escorts by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, both during the middle of the ride and during the last quarter mile.
It quickly became apparent to us, both early on and as the week progressed, that a tremendous amount of time, effort, and talent went into putting this event together and carrying it through to a successful end. We congratulate all the Fire Velo volunteers for pulling off such a superb achievement.
We are extremely proud of the fact that, throughout their journey, the Code 3 logo was prominently displayed on the lower back center of the Fire Velo jerseys. We congratulate each and every one of the Fire Velo cyclists and, above all, we thank them; for in giving of themselves through the sport of cycling, they have helped support Code 3, as well as other organizations. It was an honor that we were invited to be a part of this week-long achievement, and we thank the entire Fire Velo team for allowing us to share in their incredible journey.

FIRE VELO'S SF TO LA RIDE:
6 DAYS DOWN, 1/2 DAY TO GO!
August 24, 2012
We had the distinct pleasure of re-joining Fire Velo in Oxnard this evening. After completing a whopping 90 mile ride from Lompoc to Oxnard, the cyclists were treated to some great hospitality and a delicious lasagna dinner by the Oxnard Fire Department at Station 1. Following dinner, Code 3 President Lorenzo presented Fire Velo President Jim Berklite with a plaque in appreciation for all Fire Velo has done for our cause.
The cyclists will cross the finish line tomorrow at Noon on the Santa Monica pier, escorted by fire apparatus from Station 88, and Code 3 will be there to cheer them on. Hope you will too! Or, if you can't attend due to geographic or other reasons, show them your support by "liking" the Fire Velo Facebook Page.

FIREMAN ROB: TRULY AN IRONMAN
August 23, 2012
It is difficult to describe what Firefighter Robert Verhelst (Madison, WI) has done for our Foundation in the past year, because he has done so much. Thus far in 2012, he has already completed 8 (that's right, EIGHT) triathlons, 6 of them full ironman distance, in order to raise funds for our cause, with an added twist: wearing firefighter turnout gear, including air tank and helmet, during the grueling marathon portion of each and every one. In turn, other firefighter athletes are climbing on board to compete for our cause as well. Fireman Rob's selfless commitment and sacrifice is something for which all of us at Code 3 will always be grateful, as will all those whom his efforts will help. His next tri is the Ironman Wisconsin on September 9. If you can, please give Fireman Rob a shout of support.
Here is a quote from Robert from his Facebook page:
"Looking for your help with the final push for the 2012 Mission of Hope and Honor to raise funds for Code 3 for a Cure Foundation and the numerous firefighter and their families battling cancer throughout the country needing our help.
"There are four races left for this year (Ironman Wisconsin, Kona, Florida, and Arizona). Get together groups, teams or co-workers and we will be giving out prizes for largest donations at the end of the Mission. Ranging from helmet shields to TRI gear to special gear from the year.
"Follow this link and thanks for all your support and help in reaching our goal."
INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE FOR THE WEEK
FROM FIREFIGHTER KATRINA SILVIA
Posted August 22, 2012
Here is our inspirational quote for the week, written by Firefighter Katrina Silvia (Florida): "Ran 10.5 miles with a 20 pound steel SCBA along with wearing my bunker pants in 83 degree weather = one tired girl. Trying to spread the word about Code 3."
Firefighter Silvia is training hard in preparation for the Ironman Florida on November 3, the marathon portion of which she will complete in firefighter turnout gear, including SCBA, in order to bring attention to our Foundation and cause. She and other members of Team Firefighter [including FF Robert Verhelst (Wisconsin), who will be representing us in the Ironman World Championship on October 13] are competing in various runs and triathlon events across the country in support of Code 3.
We are amazed by the fact that Katrina, Robert, and others, who risk their lives every day to protect life and property, are now working so hard outside of their jobs in order to help a brother or sister firefighter who is battling cancer, in support of our Foundation's purpose.

DAY 2 OF FIRE VELO'S SF TO LA RIDE
August 20, 2012
It was an incredible day for Fire Velo, and a remarkable ending at the Watsonville Fire Department, who set up their aerial ladder truck with the American flag waving below it to welcome the riders, then provided a delicious feast for the hungry athletes. Our gratitude to the Watsonville firefighters for their tremendous hospitality, and for their heartfelt expression of support for Madison Firefighter Robert Verhelst as he prepares for the Ironman World Championship on October 13, where he will represent the Code 3 cause.

FIRE VELO'S ANNUAL SF TO LA RIDE BEGINS
August 19, 2012
Fire Velo members started their day in the early morning hours and, assisted by the Southern Marin Fire Protection District in Sausalito, who hosted their departure, began their week-long journey to Santa Monica. The cyclists first proceeded across the Golden Gate Bridge, then down the beautiful coast on Highway 1, and ended the first day's ride at the Coastside Fire Protection District Headquarters, Station 40, at Half Moon Bay, where the Coastside firefighters and Half Moon Bay Volunteer firefighters welcomed everyone with incredible hospitality, as well as a great barbecue feast for all the hungry riders.
The Coastside and Half Moon Bay firefighters also took the time to give a special encouraging message to Madison, WI Firefighter Robert Verhelst, who will be
representing our cause at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, HI on October 13. See their message of encouragement here. For those who haven't yet heard about what Robert is doing, you can watch what he has to say about his special efforts for Code 3.
We are honored to have been invited by Fire Velo to be a part of this incredible week-long journey, and are grateful for the fact that these Fire Velo members are riding in honor of ours and other fire service based organizations. It has been a truly worthwhile experience already, and we have gotten to know some super people; from the riders, to the support team, to the other nonprofit leaders. We are grateful to Fire Velo President Jim Berklite and his leadership team for choosing our Foundation to be a part of this journey. We will post updates throughout the week, on this page as well as Facebook and Twitter.
FIRE VELO SF TO LA RIDERS GET "ORIENTED"
August 18, 2012
Fire Velo kicks off its annual SF to LA Ride on Sunday, August 19, and Code 3 for a Cure is honored and proud to be a part of it! After Fire Velo President Jim Berklite gave an informative pep talk tonight to all the firefighter bicyclists who are participating in the ride, Code 3 President Lorenzo Abundiz shared with the group what our mission is all about--and the inspiration behind it.
The SF to LA Ride begins tomorrow morning shortly after 8am, when the riders will cross the Golden Gate Bridge, and will end when they reach the Santa Monica Pier on August 25. The ride is serving as a fundraiser for ours and other nonprofit firefighter organizations. We greatly appreciate what Fire Velo is doing for our cause, and we thank all the athletes who are riding to help others.
Fire Velo is a national fire department based cycling club that supports firefighter organizations, and has given our Foundation tremendous support already this year, in the form of a generous contribution to our cause. We can vouch for the fact that Fire Velo truly lives up to its slogan: "Firefighters Riding for Others," and we wish Godspeed to all the riders as they embark on this incredible journey.

FIREFIGHTER NATHAN WILLIAMS
RISES UP TO THE "CHALLENGE"
Posted August 6, 2012

On Sunday, August 5, 2012, Team Firefighter member Nathan Williams (San Luis Obispo Fire, California) competed in the 10k Central Coast Cancer Challenge, wearing firefighter turnout gear in support of our Foundation. During the race, he and another runner were taking turns passing each other up. Back and forth they went until finally, about 3/4 of the way through the race, the fellow runner tossed out a challenge to Firefighter Williams: beat him, and he would donate $100 to Code 3 for a Cure. As it turns out, FF Williams did just that, turnouts, helmet, and all! The fellow racer wrote out a check on the spot. Our thanks to Nathan for spreading the word, and to the kind athlete who contributed so generously to the cause.

NATIONAL FIRE VELO CYCLING CLUB GIVES GENEROUSLY TO THE CAUSE
June 10, 2012
"Firefighters Riding for Others." That was the slogan on display on the National Fire Velo Cycling Club booth at the Annual Los Angeles River Ride on June 10. Well, the Code 3 for a Cure team quickly realized just how appropriate that slogan is when we were presented with a generous donation check from Jim Berklite, President of Fire Velo, and his fellow team members. Our gratitude is owed to Fire Velo for this very kind and generous contribution to our cause.
The National Fire Velo Cycling Club is a nonprofit 501(c)3 public charity organization and Fire Department based cycling club dedicated to providing financial assistance to fire department based groups and causes such as our own.
For information on how you can become a member of this great organization while at the same time playing a role in assisting firefighter organizations, please visit the Fire Velo website.
Once again, our sincere thanks to Fire Velo for the incredibly generous support!

SCOTT SAFETY SUPPORTS CODE 3 WITH A NEW AIR-PAK
Posted June 7, 2012
Scott Safety has shown incredible support for our cause. Early in the year, Scott provided the Foundation with a high-quality Air-Pak for use by Firefighter Robert Verhelst throughout the year in his quest to bring attention to our cause. (Firefighter Verhelst is competing in a myriad of triathlon events throughout the country in 2012, donning firefighter gear, including helmet and the Scott Air-Pak, during the marathon portion of each event, in order to raise awareness and funds for our cause. Read more about FF Verhelst's efforts.)
In addition to the Air-Pak, in March 2012, Scott Safety provided a generous donation to help us continue our mission and reach toward our goals.
Now, Scott has provided a new 5.5 Air-Pak with a Code 3 custom logo on the cylinder (see photo left) for FF Verhelst's use in his efforts for our cause. Our gratitude is owed to Scott Safety for the amazing encouragement and support.
MEMBERS OF TEAM FIREFIGHTER COMPETE FOR THE CAUSE

On May 5, 2012, the Code 3 for a Cure team attended the Ironman St. George in Utah to support Team Firefighter members Rick Van Tuyl and Robert Verhelst, who were competing for our cause. This was FF Verhelst's fifth triathlon already this year in his efforts to bring attention to the cause. As we were leaving the swim area to stage along the course, we received some very good news: across the country on that same day, in New Jersey, three other Team Firefighter members were also competing for our cause at the Devilman triathlon: Michael Cronin, Larry Durland, and Brian Manners. Says Code 3 President Lorenzo Abundiz, "Their demonstration of true determination and spirit is what is needed to make change toward a positive outcome against firefighter related cancers. Our gratitude is owed to all of these men, as well as to Kyle Hamilton and Team Firefighter, for the amazing support."
FIREMAN ROB TEARS IT UP AT IRONMAN TEXAS
May 19, 2012
See event photos

It was a hot and humid day in The Woodlands, Texas on May 19, something that Firefighter Robert Verhelst (whom we like to refer to as "The Wisconsonian") is not used to; but that didn't stop him, nor did it even slow him down, in his determination to bring attention to our cause. Nope. In fact, FF Verhelst did his fastest race yet, finishing at 15:27:23. Perhaps it helped (?) that, just two weeks earlier, Rob had completed what could arguably be called one of the most, if not THE most, difficult triathlon in the history of Ironman: St. George, Utah, on May 5, where the triathletes were up against 5 foot swells in the water and 30 mph winds on the bike and Rob, nevertheless driven by the cause, finished at 1:00am. After that, this one, Rob's 6th already this year, was probably a piece of cake.
Deputy Chief Wayne Walker of The Woodlands Fire Department was on hand with his firefighting team to support Robert in his efforts for our cause. Under Chief Walker's direction, various crews came out to encourage Rob along the way, and lights and sirens went off as he passed by. Officers from the Texas State Highway Patrol, as well as the Harris County District Attorney Police, who were there working the event, also showed tremendous support. Members of The Woodlands community were very encouraging and were cheering for Fireman Rob, as were people from all over the world. Congratulations and gratitude to Rob for his amazing efforts, as well as Team Firefighter and all the firefighters out there who are competing for our cause.
FIRE VELO ANNOUNCES NEW TRAILER
We are pleased to pass on the news that the National Fire Velo Cycling Club has just obtained a beautiful new trailer, with financial assistance from the Annenberg Foundation. Says Jim Berklite, President of National Fire Velo, "The new trailer will be used at several events throughout the year. The main purpose of the trailer is to increase the safety of our riders. The trailer will also increase the visibility of our Club, partners and the events we support..." Code 3 for a Cure is proud to be one of those partners.
Congratulations to Jim and all at National Fire Velo on this great addition!
Fire Velo will be participating in the LA Rivers Ride on June 10, where they will be debuting their new trailer and will have a booth for their group. Read more on the National Fire Velo website.
FIREFIGHTER ROBERT VERHELST
ACHIEVES TRIATHLON #5
FOR THE CODE 3 FOR A CURE CAUSE
While Inspiring Others to Do the Same
IRONMAN ST. GEORGE
May 5, 2012

A relatively calm day was the weather prediction for St. George, Utah, on May 5. But as soon as the triathletes hit the water to begin the first Ironman of the season, it seemed, the wind picked up and the water became choppy, throwing 5 foot swells at the competitors with a vengeance. In the water among their fellow triathletes were Team Firefighter members Robert Verhelst (setting off on his fifth triathlon already so far this year for our cause) and Rick Van Tuyl (competing in his first triathlon of the year, also racing for our cause). Incredibly, while many had to give up the race due to the brutal conditions in the water, both Robert and Rick made it out and climbed onto their bikes to begin another challenge: biking 112 miles amidst high winds, including 35-mile-per-hour gusts, on an already challenging course. Rick completed most of the bike course before meeting Robert along the marathon course to cheer him on. Hundreds of triathletes had to drop out of the race, and there had been so much confusion prior to the swim that some athletes had been mistakenly told the event had been cancelled due to the sudden and unexpected brutal conditions.
As we Code 3 team members repositioned ourselves to support Fireman Rob along the marathon course, we learned, through a tweet from Firefighter Larry Durland, that two other Team Firefighter members were competing for our cause that day on the other side of the country: Firefighters Michael Cronin and Brian Manners were racing in the New Jersey Devilman Triathlon for Code 3 for a Cure. What an awesome feeling to receive that piece of news and to know they were doing that.
As the day progressed and Fireman Rob made his way toward the halfway mark of the marathon portion, it became more and more apparent just how difficult a challenge he must have been experiencing. In a triathlon hundreds had to drop out of, and one that had been dubbed "Insane" and "The hardest thing I've ever done in my life" by first place winner Ben Hoffman, here was Robert, still several hours away from the finish line, wearing an extra 65 pounds of firefighter turnout gear, pushing himself to the limits, with a two-fold purpose: to honor and remember those who lost their lives as a result of 9/11, and to bring attention to our cause. People were so inspired by what Robert was doing that, as he neared the finish line in the early morning hours, one by one individuals began to join him, and by the time he reached the end of the race at 1:00am, he had a whole entourage behind him which included the St. George Fire and Police Departments.
We are grateful and proud for what Robert Verhelst accomplished that day, and for what fellow firefighters Rick Van Tuyl, Michael Cronin, and Brian Manners achieved, all representing both Team Firefighter and Code 3 for a Cure in their incredible efforts. We also thank Power Test and Scott Safety for their sponsorship and support, as well as Red Mountain Resort for kindly accommodating our team, and all who came out in support of our team members on the course.
FIREFIGHTER ETHAN DADE COMPLETES ST. LOUIS HALF MARATHON
FOR CODE 3 FOR A CURE
April 15, 2012
We are grateful and proud that, on April 15, 2012, Firefighter Ethan Dade of the Madison Fire Department (Wisconsin) completed the St. Louis half marathon for Code 3 for a Cure, wearing turnout gear which included the helmet shield that symbolizes our cause (designed by FF Robert Verhelst). FF Dade, inspired by Robert's efforts, decided that "If Rob can do (so many) ironman length races I can do a couple half and full marathons to spread the message even more."
FF Dade has been a City of Madison Firefighter/Paramedic for the last four years and a Firefighter since 2005. Says FF Dade, "This job offers so many ways to get into the community and make a mark and I figured why not do it for this awesome cause with the exposure we have as firefighters. I have seen the effects of cancer on not only some of our members but also members of surrounding departments and think the message and fundraising you are doing for cancer victims, survivors and their families is top notch."
FF Dade completed the St. Louis half marathon in 2 hours and 21 minutes. Next stop: the Chicago Rock n Roll half marathon on July 22, where he will again compete in firefighter gear to help spread the word. Thank you, Firefighter Ethan Dade, for all you are doing for the cause.
FF ROB VERHELST COMPLETES TRIATHLON #4
IN HIS INCREDIBLE QUEST OF HOPE & HONOR
FOR THE CAUSE
HITS - Napa, California - April 15, 2012

On Sunday, April 15, 2012, in the early morning hours on the shores of Lake Berryessa (Napa, CA), FF Robert Verhelst joined fellow triathletes as they began an extremely challenging day. To be sure, each had a story to tell about their own personal journey and how they arrived at this moment: a moment in which they were about to immerse their entire bodies in 53 degree water at 7am on a cold, brisk spring morning, then bike, then walk/run in what would surely be a very long day for each of them. Highly admirable mixed in with a little crazy. But perhaps none can compare to FF Verhelst, a.k.a. "Fireman Rob." After completing the lengthy swim and bike ride, Rob will don an extra 65 pounds of firefighter turnout gear, including air tank and helmet, before embarking on the half marathon, and final, portion of the event. Crazy? Maybe. But perhaps a better word to describe Fireman Rob is "Driven." Rob says he was inspired when he heard about the Code 3 for a Cure cause, which is to help firefighters who are stricken with cancer. Statistically, firefighters are hit very hard by cancer due to the toxins, carcinogens, and unknown chemicals to which they are exposed in the day to day performance of their duties. Code 3 for a Cure Founder Lorenzo Abundiz has fought three cancers and knows firsthand that the disease can affect you not only physically and emotionally, but financially as well.
Considering that this was the fourth triathlon Rob has already achieved thus far in 2012, "driven" must be an understatement for what exists inside of him. Perhaps having a positive support network plays a role as well. It certainly seemed to in Napa. California State Fire Marshal Tonya Hoover showed up during the transition from bike to run to show her support, and provided tremendous encouragement to Rob. Kyle Hamilton of Team Firefighter, along with wife, Laura, gave incredible support, including transportation and housing throughout the weekend, amidst their own achievements and celebrations, with Laura achieving her first olympic event on Saturday and their son winning an award as well. Additionally, Kyle supported Rob by staying alongside him throughout the entire half marathon, and the Code 3 for a Cure family was in attendance at the event as well.
In addition to pushing himself to complete these triathlons for our cause, Rob is inspiring others, through his example, to do the same. FF Ethan Dade represented Code 3 for a Cure at the St. Louis Half Marathon on April 15, and FF Rick van Tuyl will represent Code 3 as well, along with Rob, at Rob's next stop: St. George, Utah, on May 5, which will be Triathlon #5 for Rob--and the first Ironman event of the year.
FF ROBERT VERHELST ACHIEVES TRIATHLON #3
TOWARD WORLD RECORD

ALL ABOUT FAMILY. As you already know if you have been reading our website, FF Robert Verhelst of the Madison (Wisconsin) Fire Department is in the process of completing 27 ironman distance triathlons in a one-year period to break the Guinness World Record in order to raise awareness and funds for our cause. And, after swimming 2.4 miles and biking 112, he completes the marathon portion of each event in firefighter turnout gear, including air tank and helmet, to honor and remember all who lost their lives as a result of 9/11. Admiringly referred to as Code 3's "human fire truck" by President Lorenzo Abundiz, FF Verhelst achieved his third triathlon on Sunday at the HITS Triathlon in Ocala, Florida, and we are extremely proud and grateful for all he is doing for the cause.
This particular event was all about family: the firefighter family, the local community family and, of course, FF Verhelst's own family. Held near his family's home town, Robert had the support not only of his parents John and Suzy and son Noah, who are always tremendously positive, but also of the students of Lecanto High School in Lecanto, Florida, who drove over an hour to the event and spent the vast majority of their Sunday cheering on Robert at various points along the course. Some of the students were so determined to support him that they joined him for a short period--in spite of only having flip flops or boots to wear--and sported some blisters of their own as a result. But they didn't seem to care as they gleefully encouraged Fireman Rob, all wearing the red shirts designed specifically for their support of him at this event. One of the students, Edgar, even wrote an article for the school newspaper about Robert and Code 3. Read it here. Thank you, Edgar! Another student, Korey, remained into the late night hours and helped a great deal in various ways, which made all the difference for our volunteer team. Thanks, Korey, for your time and support! Special thanks to Brian, a member of the Lecanto teaching staff, for joining Rob for a while, as well as his beautiful wife and children who came out in support. The Code 3 volunteers were impressed with the maturity and positive attitudes of all the Lecanto students who attended, and want to thank each and every one of them for giving Fireman Rob the encouragement he needed to stay the course.
Marion County Fire Rescue units awaited Robert near the finish line and escorted him in the final leg, and firefighters walked alongside him as he crossed the finish line. It was terrific to see the brotherhood of the fire service evidenced at this event, and our gratitude is owed to the Marion County Firefighters for all of their support. The local Park Rangers were extremely supportive as well, and we want to especially thank Park Ranger Lonnie, who also joined Robert for part of the course, as well as his wife Debbie and two adorable twin girls, Dakota and Montana, who kindly offered him a drink of water along the way.
As always, the HITS staff, led by Mark Wilson, did a great job and worked very hard beginning very early in the morning and continuing into the late night hours. Thank you, HITS!
Many thanks to Power Test for the generous donation, to Scott Safety for the generous donation and for providing a high quality air pak to Fireman Rob, and to all of our sponsors. Special thanks to Triathlete and Coach Will Smith for generously giving of his time and training expertise, and to Team Firefighter for the tremendous support.
To all who are supporting Fireman Rob in his incredible journey, we want to thank you so much for your kindness and encouragement. It is truly a blessing. We ask that you continue to show your support if you can as the year progresses. Your phone calls, Facebook comments, and other ways you show support really helps. Follow Fireman Rob on Facebook.
Next: #4 at the HITS Triathlon in Napa Valley, California, on April 15. Go, Fireman Rob!

FIREFIGHTER CAMARADERIE & SUPPORT TRULY EVIDENT. For the second time this year in his quest to break the World Record, Madison, WI Firefighter Robert Verhelst achieved what would be an insurmountable task for most: he completed a 26.2 mile marathon in firefighter turnout gear, including air tank and helmet--after finishing a 2.4 mile swim and 112 mile bike ride. Referred to as Code 3 for a Cure's "human fire truck" by President Lorenzo Abundiz, FF Verhelst's purpose in doing so is to raise awareness and funds for the Foundation, while at the same time honoring and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice as a result of 9/11. Verhelst says he believes in Code 3's cause in large part because it is about providing financial assistance to firefighters suffering from cancer, which means helping them and their families at the most fundamental level, where they need it most. Read about cancer's effect on firefighters. FF Verhelst's passion for the cause, and his determination to accomplish his goal, was evident every step of the way as he pushed himself to complete the final marathon portion with a very heavy added load on his back. But perhaps as equally impressive as FF Verhelst's incredible drive was the tremendous outpouring of support he received from the Corpus Christi Fire Department. Beginning with the starting horn at 7am which kicked off the 2.4 mile swim portion of the event, Fire Chief Robert Rocha was there, along with Carlos Torres, President of the Corpus Christi Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 936, Battalion Chief David Saenz, Captains John Luis and Joel Ponton, and their team of firefighters. And that was just the beginning. It seemed every step of the way throughout the day and into the night, firefighters from various stations were there, giving words of encouragement to FF Verhelst. Several, including Fire Chief Rocha, Carlos Torres, and Captain Michael Pinkerton, joined Verhelst during various legs of the marathon. He was flanked by fire apparatus, both behind him and in front of him. And as he completed the race in the late night hours, Verhelst was greeted by the aerial ladder of Truck Company 1 as it stretched out over the finish line, operated by Captain Robert Pena and FF/Paramedic Jose Gonzalez. It was truly a remarkable day in terms of FF Verhelst's incredible achievement--and in terms of the tremendous encouragement and support shown to him and Code 3 by the Corpus Christi Firefighters. Our gratitude is owed to all of them, as well as to the HITS staff for their support and for coordinating another successful event. Our deep appreciation to PowerTest, Inc., to Scott Safety, and to all of our sponsors for their generosity, and to the Corpus Christi Fire Department's C.A.R.E. Program for their generous donation to the Foundation. Next stop: HITS Triathlon in Ocala, Florida, March 25.
